A handful of months ago I received a bar of handmade soap in the mail from photographer Erik Jacobs. It came with a note saying he was leaving photojournalism to attend The Farm College, and the soap, created by him and his wife, was a way of wishing his clientele farewell. I emailed him instantly.

I had a million issues about farm school. What was it? Why was he going? How could he give up photojournalism?

Turns out The Farm School is just that a yearlong program to teach 15 pupil farmers how to grow organic and natural vegetables, increase livestock, and actively control forests for firewood and wood. With Thanksgiving approaching and foods on my mind, I caught up with Jacobs by cellphone, and his solutions to my concerns, like several problems surrounding foods and agriculture these days, were complicated.

"I sense a obligation, and it can be an honor, and it feels extremely essential to me," he says about his want to attend farm college. " I am here because of my concern for our planet, and I feel a obligation to share that. The roof is on fire, and all we are talking about is 'what's for dinner.' "

Jacobs has been chronicling his knowledge on his blog, The Plough and Stars Undertaking. He posts a weekly dispatch sharing the joys, and the challenges, of his new endeavor.

"At farm school I am interested in becoming shut to the entire cycle of existence, and as a photographer there is a portion of me that needs to show that," he explained. " I am drawn to pictures that illustrate life and death at the exact same time that present humans' transience in comparison to the globe around us."

Nonetheless, he says, it hasn't all been uncomplicated.

"I assume it truly is confirmed what I suspected that there is a good deal of joy in this operate and it feels incredibly purposeful. It has also confirmed some of my considerations that some of the function is not fun. It can be tricky on your entire body and is relatively tedious and monotonous at times."

"But I never get up and check my email, drive by way of targeted traffic," he adds, "It feels exceptionally natural and intuitive in a way that is built in."

Jacobs' wife, Dina Rudick, is a photographer at the Boston Globe, and they have a residence in Somerville, Mass., with six chickens and 9 raised beds. The Farm College, in Athol, Mass., is a few hours away, so they don't get to take a look at also frequently. But they see his schooling as some thing they are executing together, and eventually they hope to lead a far more agrarian lifestyle, along with the baby they are expecting in May.

And, Jacobs says, the finest factor about currently being a photographer on a farmer's schedule the light at sunrise and sunset is wonderful.
